Top Gear, 1903 Edition
I came across the following passage this morning in the August 3, 1903 issue of the Times:
Another part of the same article notes a Long Branch NJ ordinance "restricting the speed of automobiles to six miles per hour."
An automobile scorcher who was arrested last week for speeding his machine at the rate of thirty miles an hour in Central Park explained in court that his vehicle was one of his own construction, built to go at the moderate rate of twelve miles an hour, and his delight at being assured that he was going at almost three times that rate overshadowed his discomfort at being held for trial..."Automobile scorcher"...!
